Texas Lockup: Trump administration reveals biggest ICE detention center to date

New Immigration Detention Center Opens in Texas

The Trump administration has launched the largest immigration and customs detention facility in the United States as part of its efforts to address the ongoing issue of illegal immigration.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced over the weekend that the Lone Star Lockup at Fort Bliss, Texas, is now “open for business.”

“This is the biggest ICE detention center in U.S. history,” Abbott shared in a post on social media, adding a touch of Texas pride with, “Everything is big in Texas.”

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re moving rapidly to find cost-effective and innovative methods to address the mass deportation of illegal criminals,” Abbott stated.

Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) chimed in, suggesting the facility should have names like “Lone Star Lockup” or “Texas Hold’em,” in response to Abbott’s announcement.

The Lone Star Lockup has the capacity for 1,000 beds, with plans to expand it to accommodate 5,000 by the year 2027. The center is designed to include areas for treatment, legal access, and various recreational facilities.

ICE officials anticipate that this facility will help to streamline and enhance the deportation process, a key focus of the Trump administration.

Representative Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) believes the new center will alleviate overcrowding in other facilities and function as a processing center. “Fort Bliss is a superb military establishment,” Gonzales remarked. “It’s essential we support this initiative rather than criticize it.”

Homeland Security Director Tricia McLaughlin echoed these sentiments, stating, “We’re working efficiently to implement American objectives related to the deportation of illegal criminal aliens.” She emphasized the need for partnerships with state and local governments to expand bed space, including using military bases like Fort Bliss.
