Chicago Mayor Dodges Questions on Federal Funding for Police

Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago has been hesitant to respond when asked about accepting federal funding to bolster the local police force. This concern arises as President Donald Trump announces plans to deploy the National Guard to the city.

Johnson, along with other Democratic leaders in Illinois, has voiced strong opposition to the proposed troop deployment intended to address rising crime rates. Drawing from his background in union advocacy, Johnson maintains that reducing crime effectively involves making investments in underprivileged communities.

In an interview with MSNBC, Johnson emphasized the importance of enhancing social programs, expressing a willingness to collaborate with Trump on federal spending. However, when directly questioned by host Joe Scarborough about accepting federal funds for the Chicago Police Department, Johnson evaded a clear answer.

He stated, “I don’t think the answer is simply to give arbitrary numbers around police officers.” In response to Scarborough’s request for additional officers, Johnson began to argue that police alone aren’t a comprehensive solution. Scarborough interjected to point out the legitimacy of Johnson’s proposed programs, alongside the need for increasing police presence.

Johnson remarked that while Chicago had a greater number of police officers in the 1990s, the crime rate was notably higher compared to today.

Scarborough continued to press Johnson on the issue, but the mayor stuck to his guns. “Look,” he said, “we’re working hard to make sure the police department is fully supported. But it’s not just about increasing police numbers. My vision includes police alongside affordable housing, mental healthcare, and youth employment—it’s a holistic approach.”

The plans for deploying the National Guard in Chicago have been underway for several weeks, with the operation set to commence in September. Troops designated for this duty operate under federal oversight and assist local law enforcement.
