Minnesota mother faces criminal charges after using the N-word towards her 5-year-old autistic son in a viral video

Allegations Surface After Playground Incident Involving Child

A five-year-old boy with autism reportedly faced a racial slur from a woman at a playground, leading to public backlash and financial support for the child’s family. Shiro Hendrix, a mother from Rochester, is now facing charges months later after a video of the incident gained traction.

Hendrix is set to be charged with three counts of disorderly conduct, carrying a potential sentence of up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of $1,000. This detail was shared by a local news outlet.

A spokesperson from Rochester mentioned that the case’s intricate nature necessitated a lengthy review process, especially considering the significant public interest.

In April, a video surfaced online showing Hendrix using a racial slur while directing her comments at a five-year-old Somali child playing on the swings. Another bystander, Charmei Omar, confronted her about the choice of words, prompting Hendrix to respond disrespectfully, even targeting those defending the child.

“That’s how he behaves,” Hendrix reportedly said, repeating the offensive term multiple times. There was a notable disregard for the context surrounding the conversation.

Following the viral video, Hendrix claimed to have experienced harassment and decided to seek sympathy online. She initiated a fundraising campaign on the platform GivesEndgo, setting a target of $1 million to relocate her family amid the backlash.

Her campaign has apparently raised over $525,000. In her appeal, Hendrix asserted that her personal information was shared online, which led to her distress. The response she received seemed to catalyze her call for financial assistance to help her leave Rochester, Minnesota.

Interestingly, Hendrix has a history with law enforcement, having faced citations for various offenses in the past. The outcome of her charges remains unclear at this point.
