Poll Reveals Widespread Concern About Crime in the U.S.
A recent AP-NORC survey published Wednesday indicates that many Americans view crime as a significant problem in the country, with a majority approving of President Trump’s handling of the issue.
According to the survey, a striking 81% of respondents see crime as a “major issue.” This includes 96% of Republicans, 68% of Democrats, and 72% of independents. Interestingly, 53% of Americans expressed approval of Trump’s approach to tackling crime.
Trump’s aggressive strategy has involved placing the DC Metropolitan Police under federal control, marking a notable shift in how law enforcement is managed. He has also called in federal resources, like the National Guard, to help curb crime in Washington, D.C.
In fact, Trump remarked, “We argue that we are against crime. Democrats like crime,” highlighting a clear partisan divide in perceptions of crime issues.
Polling data suggested that around half of white and Hispanic Americans approve of Trump’s crime-fighting measures, whereas approval among black Americans sits at only 27%.
The survey, which engaged 1,182 American adults, was conducted between August 21st and 25th, shortly after Trump implemented his policy of federal oversight over the Metro Police Department. Notably, the city went 12 days without a reported murder during this period. As of now, 1,173 arrests have been made under the current policing strategy.
Trump pointed out that, before his intervention, criminals felt emboldened, believing that “nothing will happen to them” when they committed offenses.
On another note, describing the situation, Trump commented, “The latest victims were mercilessly beaten by local thugs,” suggesting a deep sense of urgency surrounding the crime issue in urban areas.
