Trump and Congressional Allies Reinforce Control in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump, along with his congressional allies, is making moves to strengthen his influence in Washington, D.C. According to leadership aides, House Republicans are collaborating with the White House to draft a set of bills focused on addressing governance and crime issues in the capital.

In a late-night post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that discussions are underway for a comprehensive crime bill, stating, “It’s something our country needs, and it continues even more now.” This indicates an ongoing effort to tackle crime at the federal level.

Republican Strategies to Avoid Government Shutdown

While aiming to support Trump in his initiatives, House GOP members are exploring various strategies to maintain their position against D.C. police. Under the District of Columbia Home Rules Act of 1973, the President can temporarily federalize D.C. police for up to 48 hours, with the potential to extend that time to 30 days after notifying Congress.

This control comes with the stipulation that any lengthy deployment requires approval from both the House and Senate. Some proposals have already been introduced as lawmakers take their August recess. However, the law seems flexible in terms of how long Trump can keep federal troops deployed in the capital.

Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee mentioned he’s leading the charge to amend the D.C. Home Rules Act, indicating positive feedback from House GOP leadership regarding his bill. “I sent it to [House Majority Leader Steve Scalise], and he liked the suggestions,” Ogles shared, emphasizing the need for safety measures. His proposal would still mandate congressional notification every 30 days while eliminating the 30-day limit for federalizing D.C. police.

Other Republicans, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna from Florida and Rep. Andy Biggs, have also put forward similar bills aimed at expanding the president’s authority in D.C. “There’s significant support for my version,” Luna stated, reinforcing the arguments about local governance rights.

Implications of Federal Control in D.C.

Biggs’ proposal would allow Trump to maintain control over D.C. policing for a period of six months. Given that D.C. is a federal district, Congress holds considerable sway over how it operates, which further complicates the issue of local authority versus federal intervention.

Supporters of this initiative point to a decrease in murders in D.C. since federal involvement began, suggesting that similar actions might be considered in other cities facing crime challenges. However, critics, mainly Democrats, argue that this approach undermines local autonomy and governance.

A White House official spoke on the necessity of addressing underlying crime issues, suggesting that the focus should also involve broader management and transportation concerns. The official mentioned the importance of cooperation among various levels of government to improve conditions in the capital.
