Shooting Incident at Minneapolis Catholic School
A tragic incident occurred at Announcement Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, where gunfire resulted in the deaths of at least two children and injuries to several others.
The school had recently reopened following the summer break, and students, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade, were gathered for their usual Wednesday morning prayers when the shooting took place.
Authorities indicate that the shooter, who has not yet been identified, opened fire around 8:15 a.m. There are reports suggesting that the gunman, described as being in his early 20s, took his own life after the attack.
Minneapolis officials confirmed that the gunman fatally injured two children, aged eight and ten, and left fourteen others, including three adults, wounded. Police Chief Brian O’Hara remarked on the innocence of the victims during this horrific event.
At a press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged the community to support the families affected, sharing his own heartbreak at the loss. “We all need to wrap our arms around these families and give them every ounce we can call,” he expressed. He acknowledged the depth of grief felt by many, especially as the tragic event unfolded in a place of worship where children were praying.
O’Hara further elaborated that the shooter was equipped with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, emphasizing the calculated nature of the attack against innocent worshippers.
Dr. Thomas Wyatt, the emergency medical director at Hennepin County Medical Center, provided an update on the victims. He reported that there were eleven patients brought in, with four children requiring surgery due to the serious nature of their injuries. The ages of the surviving victims range between six and fourteen.
The news of the shooting also reached President Donald Trump, who expressed his condolences and assured that the FBI was responding swiftly to the situation.
Families soon reunited with their children after the ordeal, and one local parent recounted the intense shock of the situation. Chris Freem, whose children attend the school, learned of the incident through urgent texts from his wife, who detailed a lockdown and the sounds of gunfire.
The community is left grappling with this tragedy, and many are calling for prayers and support for the victims and their families amidst an unfathomable situation.
