Media Outlets Identify Transgender Catholic School Shooter Using Preferred Pronouns

Minneapolis School Shooting Involving Trans Individual

Reports have emerged regarding Robin Westman, a transgender man involved in a tragic shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Westman, aged 23, was responsible for the deaths of two children, aged 8 and 10, and injured 17 others by firing through a window at the Annunciation Catholic Church during a public service.

National media outlets, including The Washington Post and NBC News, referred to Westman using feminine pronouns, reflecting his transgender identity. In various articles, he was described as the “daughter” of his mother, highlighting a name change from Robert to Robin in 2019. Court documents reveal that Westman’s mother, Mary, had to approve this name change while he was still a minor.

The coverage mentions that Westman had no prior felony record. There are details regarding his family’s history, including their divorce in 2013 and the fact that all three siblings attended private schools in Hastings, Minnesota.

NBC News characterized Westman as being in “her early 20s,” noting that he had posted disturbing videos on YouTube discussing topics like suicide. In one video, Westman made a threatening comment directed towards former President Donald Trump, referencing historical atrocities in a chilling manner.

ABC News later pointed out that Westman’s driver’s license lists him as female.

The Daily Mail also labeled Westman as a “trans woman,” framing the narrative around his identity as part of the broader conversation on political responses to the shooting. Details included court documents showing that his mother had to sign off on the name change application since he was still a minor at that time. Interestingly, it was also revealed that she had worked at the school before resigning in 2021.

As regional leaders responded, Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged people not to exacerbate tensions within the transgender community following the tragic event. Earlier in the day, he had cautioned against public displays of prayer, suggesting that the victims had already been offered prayers during the tragedy.

This incident sparked comparisons to previous media coverage of Audrey Hale, a female shooter in Nashville who had also been referred to using male pronouns. Some outlets corrected their original references, seeking to align with Hale’s identity.
