Concerning Incident in South Louisville

Recently, Jan Fletcher, who is 78 years old, found herself home alone during the day when a man approached her porch. Surveillance footage captured this moment outside her home in South Louisville.

The individual asked her, “Is there someone there? I don’t want to wake them up.” With a hint of confusion, Fletcher responded, “Yes. Why?”

It seemed the man was looking for directions to a local park, but he ended up moving closer, even appearing to dust something from behind her, which raised serious alarms.

This encounter took a distressing turn. Reports indicate that he aggressively groped Fletcher until she managed to push him away.

“I was infuriated that it even happened,” she shared in an interview, reflecting on her feelings of helplessness. “I kept thinking, what could have changed?”

Fletcher’s granddaughter, Jessica Powell Page, expressed her horror about the event, stating that it was “just unacceptable” and that “she didn’t deserve this.”

Authorities in Louisville are aware of the incident and have begun investigating, although the suspect has not yet been identified.

Despite this frightening experience, Fletcher, who has lived in the same community for 55 years, remains resolute about her safety. “I’ve been asked if I’m scared to sit on my porch, and I’m not,” she noted defiantly. “I want him to know he’s not going to intimidate me. I’ll be out here as long as the weather’s nice.”

Police also reminded the public that elderly individuals can be targets for harassment and scams, often starting with what seem like innocuous questions at the door. They offered some advice:

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, take it seriously and act accordingly.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look out for potential hiding spots that could be used by attackers.
  • Watch for red flags. If someone seems to be following you or behaving strangely, change your course or seek a safe place.
