Two Russian Missiles Strike British Council, Which Was Previously Accused of Espionage

Kiev Regional HQ of UK Government Agency Hit by Missiles

The UK government’s cultural promotion agency in Kiev has suffered significant damage after being struck by two missiles in a precision attack. This incident occurred during one of the largest Russian air raids Ukraine has experienced to date.

The UK Council, which has been around for 90 years and is funded by the UK government, emphasizes its mission to foster a politically neutral British culture abroad, promoting social change and the English language. Despite this, their Ukrainian office was severely damaged on Thursday.

This overnight missile strike caused at least 15 fatalities, including children, and left over 50 individuals injured. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians found themselves without power due to nearly 600 drones and 31 missiles launched in the attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting a significant number of drones and missiles, but two missiles succeeded in reaching a target on Zhylyanska Street in Kiev, hitting the British Council’s office. While no deaths occurred at that location, an overnight guard suffered injuries. The nearby European Union liaison office also reported damage from the shock waves generated by the blasts.

In response to the attack, the British Council released a statement indicating that their office in Kiev is now closed to visitors until further notice.

Amid ongoing tensions, the British Council has faced accusations from Russia for years, with claims suggesting it operates as a front for British intelligence. Earlier this year, Russian authorities labeled the organization undesirable, asserting that it aimed to disrupt Russian identity and develop a global network of agents.

Despite these claims, the council maintains its commitment to fostering peace and prosperity through arts, culture, and education.

European leaders, including British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, condemned Russia’s actions following the missile strike. Starmer stated that “Putin is killing children and civilians, blocking hope for peace. This bloodshed must end.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky categorized the targeted strikes on civilian areas as evidence that Russia is not genuinely pursuing peace. He remarked that the onslaught was a clear message to those seeking diplomatic resolution, stating, “Russia chooses ballistics instead of negotiations.” He also called for harsher sanctions against Russia, expressing concern that all chances for diplomacy have been squandered.

In a rebuttal, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for President Putin, asserted that Russia is focused on military targets and desires peace. He explained that the Russian military is fulfilling its duties while aiming to reach goals through diplomatic means.

The extent of damage to the British Council’s office was confirmed, but there were also reports of harm to the nearby EU mission in Kiev, though not severe. Images of the scene depicted a collapsed ceiling caused by shockwaves. The EU has signaled it will seek explanations from Russian representatives in Brussels regarding the attack.

The EU ambassador to Ukraine noted that the precision strike impacted their office significantly, describing the distress experienced by staff. Thankfully, they are safe, but it’s clear that the realities of war are becoming all too real for many.
