Tommy DeVito Finds New Opportunity with Patriots
Tommy DeVito was let go by the New York Giants on Tuesday, but he quickly caught the attention of another team. On Wednesday, the New England Patriots claimed him off waivers, where he is set to fill the role of third-string quarterback behind starter Drake May and backup Josh Dobbs.
DeVito, 27, had become something of an oddity during his time with the Giants, serving as their fourth quarterback after they made some significant changes in the offseason. The Giants signed both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, in addition to trading for Jackson Dart in the first round of the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
He had started eight games in two years and played in twelve overall. Last season, he finished with a 3-3 record, throwing for 1,101 yards while completing 64% of his passes, tossing eight touchdowns along with three interceptions. This performance earned him the nickname “Tommy Cutlets” as he gained some national attention.
In his last season, DeVito’s two-game starts didn’t go as well. The New Jersey native completed 70.5% of his passes but only managed 257 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Despite the ups and downs, he shone during the preseason. In a significant game against the Patriots, he completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns, helping drive the Giants to a 42-10 win. Across three preseason games, he managed to complete 30 of 38 passes, accumulating 323 yards and four touchdowns against just one interception.
Mike Vrabel, the Patriots’ director, remarked on the decision to acquire DeVito, stating, “It’s certainly going to be strengthening our roster in a premium position… whether it’s offensive, defensive, or anyone who can help us with special teams.” He acknowledged the added benefits of having Ryan Cowden, the Patriots’ vice president of player personnel and former Giants general manager, providing insights on DeVito.
