Physical Altercation in Mexican Senate
A physical confrontation erupted in the Mexican Senate on Wednesday when opposition leader Alejandro “Allito” Moreno engaged with Senator Geraldo Fernandez Noronha as lawmakers concluded a session by singing the national anthem, according to video footage.
This incident followed what Fernandez Noronha referred to as a “difficult debate” concerning the presence of foreign troops in Mexico. Reports indicate that during the livestream, Fernandez expressed frustration, urging Moreno to “let me talk” as he approached the Senate president.
In response to the altercation, Fernandez Noronha stated, “Don’t touch me,” just before both men began to shove one another. The brawl saw Moreno accidentally knock into a photographer, while another legislator joined in, pressing Fernandez while he attempted to back away.
Fernandez Noronha later informed the media that Moreno had confronted him aggressively, recounting, “He started pulling me, touching me, pushing me. He hit me.”
Following the incident, the Senate President announced plans for an emergency session on Friday, intending to propose the expulsion of Moreno, the head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), along with three other members allegedly involved.
Moreno contested Fernandez Noronha’s version of events, asserting that the Senate president instigated the altercation, as detailed in a translation of his social media post.
