Trump calls Washington mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George a 'communist'

Democratic Socialists Push Their Agenda in Washington, D.C.

Janeth Louis George, a key figure in the democratic socialist movement, is on track to potentially become the next mayor of Washington, D.C. Her campaign focuses on a range of policies that include ending the collaboration between ICE and local police, opposing youth curfews, providing free public transport, and advocating for universal child care. In response, President Trump has voiced his concerns, and Senator Tim Kaine has issued warnings about possible federal interventions in the city.

On a recent Sunday, President Trump characterized D.C. City Councilwoman Janice Lewis George as a “communist,” claiming he would block any policies that, in his view, threaten public safety. He asserted his commitment to reversing his administration’s initiatives aimed at reducing crime in the area.

In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his intention to meet with Louis George, claiming that under his leadership, the capital has become safer. He vowed to counter any agenda he perceives as undermining immigration controls, policing, and the local criminal justice system.

“Janice Lewis George, who is likely to be elected as mayor, aims to deplete the prison system, declare D.C. a sanctuary city, oppose ICE, and welcome undocumented immigrants,” Trump stated. He accused her of wanting to weaken anti-crime measures, defund the police, and continue cashless bail policies, among others.

His election win presents a significant challenge to Trump’s focus on crime reduction and the revitalization of the capital. Trump has maintained a National Guard presence in the city and frequently threatened to remove local governance should local leaders fail to address crime adequately.

Louis George has been vocal against Trump’s increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington. After the National Guard was dispatched last year, she labeled it a “direct attack” against the city’s inhabitants and criticized the president for misusing the Home Rule Act.

During her mayoral campaign, she argued that the presence of federal troops and “masked ICE agents” posed a greater threat to local youth than juvenile crime itself. Instead, she proposed investing in youth programs and community resources as solutions.

Trump has hinted at increased federal oversight should Louis George take office, stating that he is not in favor of such measures but would consider them if necessary. He emphasized an intention to maintain control over D.C. if local leaders do not deliver on crime reduction.
