Minneapolis Mayor Comments on Recent Shooting
In a recent interview on News Nation’s Elizabeth Vargas Report, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) discussed the mental health issues potentially affecting the shooters in his city. He emphasized uncertainty around the mental struggles within the community and stated, “We have to stop making this about a group of people every time one of these things goes down.”
Vargas noted that the shooter was assigned male at birth but had recently identified as female, changing their name from Robert to Robin. Frey responded by denouncing the act of violence, calling it “evil,” and criticized those who exploit such tragedies to target the transgender community: “They have lost their eyesight with a common sense of humanity.”
Afterward, Vargas referenced a report from the New York Post, suggesting that the shooter expressed fatigue with their identity, mentioning feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. Frey remarked, “I can’t talk about what’s in the brain or mind of another individual,” acknowledging the pain experienced within both the transgender and religious communities. He argued that, instead of casting blame, society should work towards support and understanding.
He concluded by advocating for compassion, stating that addressing hatred with more hatred is not the solution. “We must be TeamLove,” Frey asserted, emphasizing the need to reach out to those affected and to foster unity rather than division.
