Hegseth Starts Significant Task Force to Combat Increasing Risks from Drones

New Drone Defense Task Force Established by Pentagon

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the creation of a new task force aimed at safeguarding American air and military operations abroad from the increasing threat of drone attacks. This move comes as concerns about vulnerability to unmanned aerial systems continue to rise.

Hegseth has instructed Secretary Dan Driscoll to form the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401), which aims to streamline Department of Defense efforts to tackle the risks posed by small unmanned systems. The objective is to minimize unnecessary duplication and improve efficiency. In a note shared on Thursday, it was stated that this new task force will take over from an earlier Army initiative and include multiple branches of the military that have invested heavily in counter-drone technologies.

“We provide authentic solutions and ensure that American airspace remains secure, even when overseas. Our military personnel, who, after all, are like family, deserve robust protection,” Hegseth mentioned in a post on X-Post.

The evolving landscape of drone warfare has been a significant aspect of modern conflicts, particularly highlighted by the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine. The Army has been actively engaging with this new reality; in fact, they recently tested various counter-drone technologies in Poland as part of “Project FlyTrap.”

Small drones have fundamentally altered military engagements, significantly affecting the effectiveness of armored units and infantry on the battlefield.

According to the memo, JIATF-401 will report directly to Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg. Its director will have the authority to allocate funds of up to $50 million for each counter-drone initiative.

“This adjustment aligns perfectly with the president’s directive to reinforce the sovereignty of the United States,” the memo stated. “The Department of Defense must enhance its capabilities to protect personnel, equipment, and facilities both at home and abroad.”

The Pentagon has yet to provide a comment regarding this new development.
