Obama and Holder Advocate for Democratic Support in Redistricting Fight

Former President Barack Obama and ex-Attorney General Eric Holder released a video on Thursday, urging their supporters to back the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC). They expressed concern that Republican-led redistricting efforts in states like Texas, Florida, and Ohio could undermine the voting power of minority communities, posing a threat to lawmakers’ authority in the upcoming 2026 elections.

In the video, Obama criticized “ultra-conservative politicians” for trying to manipulate congressional districts in states such as Texas and Florida. He argued that these efforts aim to consolidate power while marginalizing the voting strength of communities of color. Obama emphasized the urgency of the situation, requesting help from viewers, particularly highlighting that Ohio is facing challenges where Republicans might secure an overwhelming majority of congressional seats.

The video included a caption reading: “Republicans are attempting to redraw congressional boundaries to secure mid-term and future legislative gains. Voters should have the power to choose their representatives, not vice versa.”

Amid the national discourse on redistricting, earlier this month, a discussion arose where it was claimed that former President Donald Trump is driving an “authoritarian movement” to manipulate the 2026 elections. This includes attempts by Texas Republicans to create a new GOP-favored congressional district. Critics described this as a move that could threaten democracy.

Furthermore, Holder remarked during an MSNBC interview that the proposed Texas redistricting plan violates the Voting Rights Act by diminishing the influence of Hispanic and Black voters. He noted that recent census data indicates that most of Texas’ population growth is from Latino residents, yet the proposed changes have resulted in the creation of predominantly white districts.

Obama has recently been vocal about political resistance, as demonstrated in mid-August when he encouraged Texas Democrats who had left the state to prevent a quorum and block redistricting laws. He praised their bravery and highlighted the broader implications of their stand in a national context.

The redistricting plan referred to as “One Big Beautiful Map” was signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, with expectations that it could enhance Republican representation in Congress by five seats. Abbott promoted the plan on social media, framing it as a fairer expression of representation. The law passed through the Texas legislature with a notable divide in votes.

On the other side, Democratic governors in places like California, New York, and Illinois are combating Republican-led redistricting initiatives. California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed his own plan to dismantle several Republican-held districts, a move that Obama has previously commended as a “measured approach.”
