Fans of NBC’s long-standing late-night show Saturday Night Live are increasingly frustrated with the rapid departures of cast members and writers as the show enters its 51st season.
The latest departure has left many viewers stunned as long-time cast member Heidi Gardner has been let go after eight seasons.
Gardner’s exit was announced just days after fellow cast member Devon Walker confirmed he would not be returning for Season 51, citing differences with the producers. He described the show environment as “toxic.”
Another cast member, Michael Longfellow, also shared that he won’t be back for a fourth season. He expressed his departure with a brief, yet clear, reluctance.
Following Walker’s announcement, Emile Wakim stated that he was also out, calling it a “gut punch” that left him without a job after a season filled with challenges.
It’s not just the cast experiencing shake-ups; major writers are leaving as well. Celeste Im announced her exit after five years, reflecting on both the fulfillment and difficulties of the role. Alongside Im, Rosebud Baker, who spent three years in the writers’ room, is also departing.
In an interview, Lorne Michaels, the showrunner, hinted at these changes coming after the show’s 50th anniversary celebration.
This tumultuous time for late-night comedy is compounded by CBS’s recent cancellation of its flagship show Late Show after a year of significant financial losses. Broadcast television, in general, seems to be losing its audience and struggling to attract the same advertising rates, leading to budget cuts that could explain SNL’s ongoing turmoil.
As more cast members leave, some fans are expressing a desire for the show to be canceled altogether, as reported by various outlets.
