Georgia Governor Endorses Derek Dooley for Senate Race
Outside Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp announced his endorsement of Derek Dooley for the Senate seat from Georgia. This announcement came just an hour before the Georgia Bulldogs kicked off their season.
Kemp noted this was a unique chance to challenge John Ossoff’s seat. Dooley, who has an extensive background in football, played at the University of Virginia before earning a law degree from the University of Georgia. He then transitioned into a 28-year coaching career starting as a graduate assistant.
Dooley’s father, Vince Dooley, was a notable coach at the University of Tennessee and also at UGA. Derek himself has spent about a decade coaching in the NFL and nearly 20 years at the collegiate level, now working with groups from five different schools nationwide.
After Dooley’s campaign announcement, Maeve Coyle, a representative for the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, released a statement that criticized his coaching background. She characterized him as a “failed football coach” who has only supported Medicaid cuts detrimental to Georgians. Coyle emphasized that as the GOP primary intensifies, Ossoff remains focused on serving working families in Georgia.
Dooley, in his remarks about the campaign, highlighted the importance of leadership and noted that it transcends various societal factors like race or income. He mentioned how Donald Trump’s outsider status changed the political landscape, implying that energy and fresh perspectives are needed in the Senate.
Kemp, who has served as governor for two terms, described Dooley as a “true political outsider,” expressing confidence that Ossoff’s voting history does not align with the values of Georgia residents. He suggested there is a genuine chance to win this race.
In a statement, Dooley expressed his gratitude for Kemp’s support, stating that the Governor’s leadership is pivotal for Georgia. He indicated a strong desire to unseat Ossoff next November to bring similar leadership to the Senate, focusing on conservative priorities. He believes the backing from Kemp will generate significant momentum as he garners support from Georgians statewide.
