Stephen A. Smith Comments on Alabama Football’s Future
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has given a cautionary note to Alabama Crimson Tide supporters, suggesting that Nick Saban’s era may be over following the team’s surprising loss to Florida on Saturday night.
In that game, Seminole quarterback Thomas Castellanos impressed with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown, contributing to a 31-17 win over Alabama, which had previously boasted a 23-game winning streak in season openers.
Smith’s analysis reflects his concerns about Saban’s influence in the past tense. He remarked, “Sorry. That’s true. But it seems like @alabamaftbl’s Nick Saban’s long gone.”
Indeed, Saban announced his retirement just before the 2024 season, leading to Alabama hiring Karen DeBoer from Washington as his successor. This shift has raised questions about the team’s future, especially since Alabama, a dominant program over the last decade, has struggled since his departure. The team missed the college football playoffs last year and lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl, with Michigan eventually claiming the national championship.
Smith has previously suggested that Alabama consider bringing in Dion Sanders to take over for DeBoer, expressing nostalgia for Saban’s coaching style.
The upcoming schedule looks challenging for the Crimson Tide, with Georgia looming next month, followed by tough matchups against Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, and Oklahoma later in the season.
