Israel launches intense airstrikes in preparation for assault on Gaza City

Israeli Forces Target Gaza City amid Escalating Conflict

Israeli forces intensified strikes on Gaza City on Sunday night, aiming at high-ranking Hamas officials as plans unfolded to take control of the entire area. Authorities in Jerusalem conveyed a stark message to foreign terrorist leaders: they’ve run out of options for safe hiding.

Air strikes and tank fire were notably active in Sheik Radwan, a significant region in Gaza City viewed as one of Hamas’ final strongholds. It seems Israeli forces are poised to seize this territory soon.

One strike reportedly killed Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida, who had been singled out by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. In light of the situation, Katz mentioned that more terrorists would likely meet the same fate during the assault on Gaza City.

Obeida was one of Hamas’ prominent military leaders prior to the tragic attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 casualties in Israel.

The Israeli military accused Obeida of orchestrating a “propaganda and psychological fear campaign” against Israel, pointing to his role in the notable hostage video released by Hamas in the wake of the conflict.

The Israeli Defense Forces stated that Obeida would no longer be able to disseminate fear or propaganda.

As tensions escalated, IDF Chief of Staff Ayal Zamir publicly emphasized that all Hamas officials, even those located abroad in countries like Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria, are considered valid targets. He asserted that most of Hamas’ leadership is outside of Gaza, and they would also be pursued.

Hamas has yet to confirm Obeida’s death, but reports from the Ministry of Health indicate that at least 78 individuals have lost their lives in the recent bombing operations.

This surge of aggression coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meetings with security ministers regarding the impending invasion of Gaza City.

Israel has ordered the complete evacuation of the city, leading to a significant displacement of hundreds of thousands as the threat of renewed hostilities looms. While a full assault isn’t anticipated for weeks, many are already fleeing, anxious about becoming trapped between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters.

The United Nations has cautioned that military control over Gaza could result in severe repercussions for civilians, and Britain has labeled the operation a significant error.

Netanyahu defended the planned invasion as the most effective strategy to neutralize Hamas and secure the release of hostages, although he did not address the latest ceasefire proposals during security discussions. Of the 251 hostages from October 7, only 20 are believed to still be alive.
