On Sunday morning, a tragic incident occurred at a Colorado airport where two small planes collided while preparing to land, resulting in one fatality and three injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that a Cessna 172 and an EA-300, each with two people aboard, were attempting to land at Morgan Municipal Airport simultaneously when they collided.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, one person from the Extra EA-300 died at the scene.
The other occupants of that plane were transported to a nearby hospital, but their current condition hasn’t been disclosed.
Those on the Cessna 172 received on-site treatment for minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office also noted that one of the planes erupted into flames following the collision, although it wasn’t specified which one.
The situation on the ground appeared devastating: one aircraft was reduced to debris while the other remained mostly intact but severely damaged.
In the chaos, some bystanders attempted to help despite thick smoke billowing from the wreckage, waiting for first responders to arrive.
A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office expressed condolences to the victims’ families and thanked the public for their immediate assistance in battling the flames.
This incident coincided with an aerobatics event hosted by the university’s team from Denver’s Metropolitan State University at the same airport, though officials quickly confirmed that the crash was unrelated to the competition.
The university extended its sympathies to those affected by this unfortunate event.
An investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board is set to commence tomorrow.
