Spain’s Strong Stock Market Performance in 2023

The company’s successful positioning within a thriving economy has greatly benefited the Spanish stock market, making it one of the top performers in Europe this year. The IBEX 35, Spain’s main stock index, has gained about 30% since its inception in 2025, outperforming many of its European counterparts. While Germany’s DAX index has also seen an increase of over 20% this year, thanks to optimism around Berlin’s significant investments in infrastructure and defense, it still trails behind the IBEX 35.

When comparing the start of the year, the IBEX 35 has shown much stronger profits than key Wall Street indicators. Additionally, the IBEX Small Cap Index has risen 22% this year, and the Madrid General Index has increased by 30%. The economic outlook for Spain is bright, having recorded a 0.7% growth in the second quarter, which exceeded expectations. Predictions suggest it could be one of the most successful economies in the European Union for 2025 and 2026, with anticipated growth of 2.6% this year and an increase of 2% the following year.

Arturo Bris, a professor at IMD Business School, attributes part of Spain’s economic success to substantial immigration from Latin America, which has led to increased domestic consumption and corporate profit growth. Moreover, political stability and predictability seem to be playing a role in the country’s progress. Anthony Esposito, founder and CEO of a U.S.-based asset management firm, expressed skepticism about the current stock market but acknowledged Spain’s stronger growth prospects compared to many developed markets outside Germany and France. He pointed out that while those markets may be imbalance, Spain’s valuation appears more appealing.

Bris further highlighted that the structure of the Spanish stock market, predominantly composed of service exporters and companies focused on the domestic market, has positively influenced investor sentiment. Service exporters, in particular, have shown resilience amid various economic challenges. Overall, the Spanish market includes companies that export both within the EU and beyond, such as major players like Acciona and airport operator Aena, contributing to a diverse and robust economic landscape.
