One Person Dies in Midair Collision of Small Planes at Unregulated Colorado Airport

Small Plane Collision at Colorado Airport

On Sunday morning, two small aircraft collided at Morgan Municipal Airport in Colorado. The incident resulted in one fatality and three injuries.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated that the pilots were preparing to land when the crash occurred, according to local reports. At the time, there were two individuals aboard each plane. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that two passengers from one of the Cessna planes suffered minor injuries, while a third individual died at the scene. Another person was taken to the hospital.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be looking into the circumstances of the accident. Meanwhile, the airport remains closed, and law enforcement is securing the area to allow for the investigation to proceed.

Emergency dispatch recordings revealed that responders noted seeing “black smoke” and “active flames” at the crash site. It was suggested that one individual was trapped in one of the planes.

Aviation expert Greg Faith commented on the incident, expressing concern about the frequency of such accidents. He remarked, “These events are rare, but they’ve been happening with increasing regularity over the past several months.” He explained that Fort Morgan is an uncontrolled airport, which means there is no control tower. Thus, pilots are required to communicate their location on a common frequency, making it necessary for investigators to check if those communications occurred.

The sheriff’s office expressed condolences for the loss of life in their social media update and thanked agencies for their aid in the response.

They also appreciated the public’s assistance in helping first responders manage the fire before they arrived. The sheriff’s office noted that more information will be withheld until the investigation is complete, and no names have been released yet.
