This Labor Day weekend in Chicago was marked by tragedy, with reports of seven murders and over 50 gunshots ringing out. The violence prompted President Trump and Governor Pritzker to consider deploying the National Guard in the city.
From Friday evening through to noon on Monday, there were at least 32 separate shooting incidents in Chicago, based on police reports.
Among the victims was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the arm while sitting inside her home when a bullet penetrated the window. Another case involved a 25-year-old woman who was shot multiple times on Friday night and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
A 31-year-old man also lost his life during a shootout. Authorities noted that two others sustained injuries while driving in the area during the violent weekend.
In one particularly tragic incident in Bronzeville around 11:10 PM, seven people were shot soon after Trump criticized Pritzker’s approach to crime in a post on Truth Social. Fortunately, reports indicated that all those shot were expected to recover.
Trump labeled the governor as “weak and pathetic” in his social media comments, asserting that there was no need for the National Guard in Chicago.
He further stated, “we’re here,” hinting at potential federal intervention if Pritzker didn’t take decisive action swiftly.
Pritzker responded by asserting that the presence of the National Guard or any troops on city streets should only be a recourse in cases of rebellion or genuine emergency. He also expressed willingness to challenge the Trump administration legally if military forces were dispatched to Chicago.
“If you actually do that, it’s an invasion of the US military,” Pritzker remarked, indicating that legal action would follow swiftly.
This situation is still unfolding, so continue to look for updates.
