Police Respond to Robbery in Cape Coral
In Cape Coral, Florida, police were dispatched to a burglary in progress just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Kyle Maivet, the homeowner, told investigators that he had just gone to bed when his security cameras alerted him to someone attempting to break into his car.
Maivet recounted the event, saying he didn’t have much time to spare. He switched out of his pajamas—yes, his Batman pajamas—and went outside to check. He spotted a suspect running near his truck, according to the police report.
The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Justin Schimpl. Detectives found that Schimpl had allegedly broken into both Maivet’s and a neighbor’s vehicle, making off with various items, including two expensive pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses, a woman’s wristlet, cash, and a gift card.
Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor—and perhaps Maivet’s choice of sleepwear—another suspect was apprehended as well. Sometimes it seems that not all heroes wear capes; some just prefer them as pajamas.
Schimpl claimed he had a partner in crime, but when questioned, the accomplice’s name changed multiple times, which raised some suspicions.
The search for additional suspects included a helicopter and K-9 units, but no further perpetrators were discovered. Schimpl was arrested and transported to Lee County Jail, facing several charges:
- Robbery with unarmed intent, a third-degree felony.
- Robbery of an occupied residence, a second-degree felony.
- Two counts of petit theft under $750, a first-degree misdemeanor from a prior conviction.
Schimpl’s bail was set at $40,000, and his next court date is noted for September 29.
Police mentioned that Schimpl was already familiar to them due to past encounters. His record appears extensive, including accusations of:
- Weapon violations.
- Resisting arrest.
- Battery.
- Probation violations.
- Drug offenses.
- Theft.
- Grand theft of a firearm.
- Possession of stolen property.
He’s also scheduled for a hearing on September 16 regarding charges related to grand theft of a firearm.
