21-year-old cheerleader charged after deceased baby discovered in trash bag in closet

Reports indicate that students from the University of Kentucky, including cheerleader Laken Snelling, have been arrested after a toddler’s body was discovered inside a garbage bag in a closet.

Snelling, aged 21, was taken into custody on Sunday following a call about an unresponsive child at a residence in the area near the campus, according to the Lexington Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers found a toddler “wrapped in a towel inside a black garbage bag” in the closet.

Authorities have identified Snelling as the mother of the deceased infant, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reportedly, she was interviewed by an executive and had been “approved to give birth,” according to police documentation.

Snelling faces charges including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and concealing the infant’s birth, as noted by law enforcement.

It’s worth mentioning that since 2022, nearly all abortions have been outlawed in Kentucky.

Snelling is listed as part of the University of Kentucky stunt cheerleading team, as seen on the university’s athletics website.

She is a senior who has competed with the team for three seasons, as per reports. A university spokesperson confirmed her role but directed further inquiries to the Lexington Police Department.

Currently, Snelling is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.

The cause of death for the infant is still under investigation by the Fayette County Coroner’s office.

As of now, the University of Kentucky has not provided comments regarding the incident.
