Belichick’s College Coaching Debut Falls Flat
Bill Belichick experienced a tough “welcome to college football” moment on Monday night as his North Carolina Tar Heels were decisively defeated by the TCU Horned Frogs, 48-14, marking the start of the 2025 college football season.
The evening was charged with anticipation, celebrity sightings, and excitement at Kenan Stadium, where Belichick’s new role as a college head coach kicked off on familiar ground in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels were eager not just for a victory but to set a positive tone for what they hoped would be a promising new chapter under Belichick.
However, the 50,000-plus fans, including personalities like Randy Moss, Michael Jordan, and Lawrence Taylor, witnessed a game that quickly spiraled out of control for North Carolina.
Belichick’s tenure began on a high note with an impressive opening drive, culminating in a touchdown run by Caleb Hood. Yet, TCU dominated afterward, reeling off 41 unanswered points for a comfortable win.
TCU quarterback Josh Hoover picked apart the Tar Heels’ defense, connecting with Jordan Dwyer for a solid 27-yard completion. The Horned Frogs emphasized a physical defensive stance, claiming an early lead with field goals in the second quarter.
Things appeared to shift momentarily when UNC’s Caleb Cost intercepted a wayward pass from Hoover. However, any hope for a turnaround quickly faded as TCU’s Bad Clark intercepted a pass from UNC quarterback Geo Lopez, resulting in a pick-six that extended TCU’s lead to 17-7 before halftime.
The second half opened with a stunning 75-yard touchdown run by Keborian Burns, further solidifying TCU’s dominance. North Carolina struggled to respond, and soon TCU was leading 34-7 after another defensive score.
Belichick made a quarterback change, bringing in Max Johnson, who managed to lead a late touchdown drive for the Tar Heels. Still, the game felt out of reach by that point, underscoring the considerable work that lay ahead.
Hoover’s performance caught the eyes of numerous NFL scouts, as he threw for 274 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Burns also shone with 113 rushing yards, while Dwyer made an impactful contribution with nine receptions for 136 yards.
While expectations weren’t high for immediate success, the lopsided nature of this loss at home came as quite a shock for Belichick’s debut in college football.
