Disturbing Incident in Louisville Involves 78-Year-Old Grandmother

A troubling event took place in Louisville, Kentucky, last week. A surveillance camera captured a young man approaching 78-year-old Jan Fletcher as she sat on her porch during the day. The individual had gotten off his bike and made his way towards her home.

According to a local news report, the young man asked Fletcher, “Is there someone there? I don’t want to wake them up. Is there someone there?” Fletcher, understandably confused, responded with “Yes. Why?”

Initially, he claimed to be looking for directions to a nearby park. However, he soon walked behind Fletcher, seemingly brushing something off her clothes, only to violently grope her afterwards.

“I was so mad this happened,” Fletcher told reporters. “I was thinking, ‘What’s the difference?’ But honestly, I don’t know what could have been different.”

Her granddaughter, Jessica Powell Page, expressed her horror at the event, stating Fletcher “didn’t deserve this,” and deemed the incident as “unacceptable.”

The Louisville Metro Police Department announced that a 13-year-old boy was arrested on Friday in connection with the incident. He has been charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse. The police noted that he does not live in the neighborhood where the incident occurred.

Despite the shocking experience, Fletcher, who has lived in her home for 55 years, insisted she still feels safe in the area. “I was asked if I was afraid to sit on my porch, but I am not,” she said confidently. “I want him to know that he’s not scaring me. Come nice weather, I’ll be out here.”

After the arrest, she expressed remorse towards the young man, saying, “I want to apologize for him doing that. It’s just sad what’s happening with young people these days. I really don’t get what they find fun about this.”

Authorities highlighted that, unfortunately, elderly individuals frequently become victims of fraud and harassment. The police also shared some safety tips for the community:

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. Pay attention to your feelings and respond accordingly to any potential threats.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for potential hiding spots near alleys, bushes, and parked vehicles.
  • Look for warning signs. If you notice someone following you, consider changing direction or entering a nearby business to show you’ve noticed them.
