Violence in Chicago over Labor Day Weekend

Over Labor Day weekend, Chicago faced a tragic spike in violence, with at least 54 individuals shot across various incidents. This surge in gun violence came just days after Mayor Brandon Johnson cautioned President Donald Trump about increasing police presence or deploying the National Guard in the city.

Authorities reported 54 shootings stemming from 37 different incidents, raising concerns over safety and response strategies. Among the deceased were a few women and men, though their identities have yet to be disclosed.

President Trump expressed his intent to send National Guard units to cities grappling with rising crime, but Mayor Johnson has pushed back against this federal intervention. In a decisive move on Saturday, he enacted an executive order that prohibits local police from collaborating with federal agencies.

“This executive order makes it clear that this president will not come to our police station and represent our police station,” Johnson stated during a press conference alongside city leaders.

The mayor emphasized that while Chicago police will adhere to state and local laws, they won’t work with the National Guard or federal authorities on patrols, arrests, or immigration enforcement.

“We protect the constitution, protect the cities, protect the people,” Johnson remarked. “We don’t want to see tanks on the streets, or our families torn apart.”

On Tuesday, Trump made statements on social media suggesting he could swiftly address crime issues in Chicago if given the opportunity.

“At least 54 people were shot and eight were killed in Chicago over the weekend… The need for leadership is dire, and I will resolve the crime problem quickly, as I did in Washington, D.C. Chicago will be safe again,” Trump claimed.
