Tow Truck Driver Arrested After Towing ICE Vehicle
The situation surrounding the arrest of a foreign influencer took an unexpected turn when a tow truck driver removed a vehicle belonging to immigration enforcement agents during an operation. Surprisingly, the officials had the last laugh.
This unusual incident began on August 18 and was captured in various videos, including a live stream from influencer Raidina Mafra Martinez, a 24-year-old undocumented immigrant from Colombia. Critics suggest she was singled out for using her online platform to alert undocumented immigrants about ICE’s presence.
In one clip, officers chase after the vehicle while Martinez is seen being detained on the ground.
On Monday, Attorney General Bill Essay announced on social media that the tow truck driver, Bobby Nunes, has been apprehended.
“Bobby Nunes is currently arrested for boldly towing an ICE vehicle. He faces charges of theft of government property,” Essay stated. “It seems he thought it would be amusing to disrupt our immigration enforcement efforts. Now, he can laugh behind bars while facing justice. If convicted, Nunes could face up to 10 years in federal prison.”
According to reports, the vehicle contained a gun safe while being towed. Prosecutors claimed that Nunes was laughing as he livestreamed his actions. Investigators managed to identify him through his TikTok account.
Mafra-Martinez’s lawyer mentioned that she resisted the officers’ commands because she wanted to see a warrant for her arrest. “She didn’t want to leave because they were masked and claimed to have a warrant. She asked them to show it, but they didn’t provide anything,” her lawyer, Carlos Jurado, explained.
A spokesperson from the White House indicated that her arrest was linked to a previous DUI conviction. While her attorneys did not contest this fact, they argued that her online activities against ICE were the real reason behind her arrest. “From what she was told, she was recording ICE actions and I believe she was targeted,” Jurado added. “The arresting officers weren’t saying anything to her.”
