Trump Proposes Armed Teachers for School Defense

During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump suggested the idea of permitting “small percentages” of teachers to carry firearms for classroom protection.

In a live interview on Fox News, reporter Peter Doocy raised the concern regarding school shootings and proposed the idea of deploying armed national security personnel to every school.

“We have significant issues within our schools, but thousands operate quite well,” Trump responded.

He then discussed enhancing school safety through constructional changes, expressing concerns that some of these measures might unintentionally make it harder for police to respond during emergencies. He ultimately reflected on the potential safety of this approach in dealing with “some of these crazy individuals.”

Later, Trump mentioned the prospect of armed educators, stating, “We have excellent teachers who genuinely care about their students. Our parents care for their kids, and so do our teachers. If we could have a small number of teachers who have military backgrounds, particularly from the National Guard, it could be beneficial.”

A committee had previously reviewed this matter in December 2018, just months after the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, leading to a vote of 13-1 in favor of arming teachers for defense in classrooms.

On February 14, 2018, teachers were unarmed during the shooting that resulted in 17 fatalities.

According to Breitbart News, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri from Pinellas County, who led the committee, pointed out that the investigation into the tragedy had shifted perspectives on the idea of arming teachers. He emphasized, “It’s important to recognize that if another person in the school had been armed, they might have been able to save the lives of those children.”
