DC Mayor Opens Door for Federal Police Presence

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has authorized federal agents to maintain their policing presence in the district indefinitely, addressing President Trump’s emergency order aimed at reducing crime in the capital.

On Tuesday, Bowser issued an order calling for local law enforcement to collaborate with federal agencies. Reports indicate that this order does not have a specified expiration date.

This decision comes about three weeks after Trump mobilized federal forces to clean up the streets of D.C. It appears that the federal oversight is intended to carry on even after the impending expiration of Trump’s recent directive.

Bowser explained that her new order “provides a pathway to move beyond the presidential emergency,” reflecting her intention to stabilize the situation.

She highlighted some positive outcomes from the federal intervention, notably its influence on the homeless community. “Our outreach team has counted 764 individuals living outdoors, with 81 in tents,” the announcement detailed. Plus, since the intervention started, about 80 more individuals have entered the shelter system.

Trump has also acknowledged the initiative’s effectiveness. “There’s no more crime issues in Washington,” he remarked to reporters, crediting Bowser for her cooperation.

In response to the federal presence, city officials have reported significant decreases in crime rates, with Trump noting a mere two murders since the federal action began. “It’s like another city. It’s the capital, and it’s going to be the best in the world,” he claimed during a visit to a police operations center.

Mayor Bowser, in a recent press conference, stated that there has been an impressive 87% reduction in carjackings and a 45% drop in overall violent crimes since federal troops arrived.

The National Guard has been busy as well, taking on roles that range from picking up litter to removing graffiti around the city. Perhaps some local residents feel this military presence, while integrated for safety, creates a unique atmosphere in the capital. The D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief, Pamela Smith, has also indicated a shift in policy to allow officers to engage with undocumented immigrants, highlighting the complexities around policing in the district amid federal oversight.
