College football update: Trump comments on Alabama's surprising defeat

Trump Comments on Space Command Move to Alabama

During a recent announcement about the relocation of Space Command from Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama, President Donald Trump made a fleeting reference to the significant losses Alabama faced against Florida. He expressed appreciation for Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville’s role in the move, noting that Tuberville might not be accustomed to such changes.

“A great coach,” Trump began, cautiously addressing Tuberville’s tenure at Auburn. “And I won’t say much about what happened with Alabama football this past weekend. But, uh, you’re probably not used to it, right?”

In response, Tuberville seized the moment to celebrate Auburn’s recent victory over Baylor. The contrast between the two teams drew laughter from the attending media. Trump observed, “Auburn won, yes. So you’re happy,” as Tuberville smiled at the result.

Auburn had kickstarted its season with a win, defeating Baylor 38-24, while Alabama was left reflecting on its disappointing performance. This past weekend, Florida pulled off a significant upset against Alabama, which is remarkable considering the Seminoles had a tough previous season, finishing at 2-10. With their opening victory, they now already reached half of their win total from last year.

Alabama, now in its second season post-Nick Saban’s retirement, is under the direction of Karen DeBoer, who posted a 9-4 record last season. However, the team missed the football playoffs and ended its season with a loss in the Rare Quast Bowl to Michigan State.

After their defeat, the Crimson Tide dropped to 21st place in the AP College Football poll. They are aiming to bounce back when they host Louisiana Monroe this Saturday. Meanwhile, Auburn seeks to keep its winning streak alive against Ball State later that day.
