Republican proposal aims at driver licenses for undocumented immigrants across the country

Republican Proposal Targets Driving Privileges for Illegal Immigrants

An exclusive proposal from Congressional Republicans seeks to address a loophole that allows some illegal immigrants to obtain driving privileges in various states. Rep. Jodey Arrington, a Republican from Texas and chair of the House Budget Committee, put forward the initiative to amend laws governing driver’s licenses related to illegal immigration.

Arrington stated, “Some states are issuing driver’s licenses to those who are here illegally. Not only is this against our laws, but it poses risks to both their families and the law-abiding citizens on the roads. We need to put an end to these practices.” Currently, 19 states—including Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico—offer some form of driver’s license to individuals without legal status.

Florida Crash Raises Concerns

This issue gained urgency after an illegal immigrant truck driver was involved in a fatal crash in Florida, killing three people. Connecticut, for instance, provides what they call “drive-only licenses” for individuals unable to prove legal residency.

The proposed legislation aims to revoke grants under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program, which currently supports states issuing licenses to illegal immigrants. This grant is a vital funding source for law enforcement and judicial operations. The plan also encourages local and state authorities to share information with the Department of Homeland Security when needed for immigration enforcement.

Arrington continued, “This proposal prioritizes American safety by prohibiting the issuance of licenses to illegal immigrants and demanding full cooperation from states with federal immigration enforcement.”

Questions Arise Over License Procedures

The investigation into the Florida incident has brought into question how the driver, Haljinder Singh, managed to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) in Washington and subsequently in California. His situation prompted a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, highlighting concerns over illegal immigrant drivers causing harm to the general public. “It seems like almost every other day, we hear about fatal accidents involving illegal foreign drivers,” remarked Tricia McLaughlin, deputy director of Public Affairs.

California, New Mexico, and Washington Under Pressure

In light of the crash, the Department of Transportation issued a 30-day ultimatum to California, New Mexico, and Washington to comply with federal CDL regulations. Both California and New Mexico indicated to Fox News Digital that they believe they already meet those requirements.

Ultimately, many voices point out that these tragic deaths could have been avoided, suggesting that illegal immigrants should not have been in the country in the first place.
