Arch Manning’s Average Performance Against Ohio State
Arch Manning entered last weekend as a top contender for the Heisman Trophy. With his last name and his role as the starting quarterback for Texas, there was quite a bit of buzz surrounding him this season.
However, his performance in Columbus, Ohio, was nothing spectacular, with the Longhorns losing 14-7 to the Buckeyes. Manning struggled, missing a few key throws and generally looking lackluster against a defense led by Matt Patricia.
Standing at 6-foot-4, the sophomore ended up with 170 passing yards and one touchdown, completing 17 out of 30 attempts. He also added 38 yards on the ground from 10 carries. While those stats might look decent for some quarterbacks—like North Carolina’s Gio Lopez, who would be thrilled with similar numbers—they certainly didn’t meet the lofty expectations set earlier this season. Analysts like Paul Feinbaum have likened Manning’s potential to that of Tim Tebow.
This underwhelming showing led many sportsbooks to lower Manning’s odds for winning the Heisman Trophy. In his place, other SEC quarterbacks like LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier and South Carolina’s Lanorris Sellers have gained more attention, along with ACC quarterbacks Carson Beck from Miami and Cade Klubnik from Clemson. Ohio’s Ereniya Smith is also now in the mix.
Among these candidates, Beck had the standout performance of the week, completing 20 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns as Miami triumphed over Notre Dame. This season, Beck has often slipped under the radar; some even suggested that, following his departure, Georgia would be better off without him, while others were skeptical about his capabilities at Miami.
It’s worth noting that the Heisman is often more about popularity than pure talent. If it were purely based on ability, players like Ndamukong Suh and Keenan Reynolds would have been recipients in 2009 and 2015 respectively. Now, Beck is crafting his narrative about overcoming skepticism—for both himself and Miami.
But don’t count Manning out just yet. If he can improve later this season, perhaps we will see him rise again in the conversation. After all, we all love a good comeback story.
For this week, there are games to watch that don’t involve either Manning or Beck.
The Week’s Best Games: No. 15 Oklahoma, Michigan
Saturday, 7:30pm ET – ABC
This matchup features two ranked teams and carries historical significance. These teams have a storied rivalry that dates back to 1975, and while the stakes today aren’t quite as high, a win for Oklahoma could relieve some pressure on head coach Brent Venables. Meanwhile, a win for Michigan could strengthen their case in the playoff conversation.
Games That May Impact the College Football Playoffs: USF at No. 13 Florida
Saturday, 4:15pm ET – SEC Network
This might not seem like a highly anticipated game. Yet, with South Florida’s recent upset of Boise State, the playoff race is becoming increasingly competitive. A strong showing against Florida could position USF advantageously, which is quite a feat considering their history in the FBS. Head coach Alex Golesh could lead them to a stronger season than the past.
For Florida, a loss to USF would effectively end any playoff hopes. Historically, they’ve performed well against the Bulls, but still.
This Week’s Strange Weekday Game: James Madison vs. Louisville
Friday, 7pm (ESPN2)
James Madison is another team fighting for a playoff spot, while Louisville is looking to solidify its status as a dark horse candidate. This game could serve as an early indicator of their potential this season.
Amazing FCS Matchup Worth Watching: South Dakota vs. Montana
Saturday, 8pm ET – ESPN+
This game showcases two of the top FCS programs, both of which have produced NFL talent and competed for championships in recent years. The Bobcats fell last season in the national title game, while the Jack Rabbits have seen success recently. A rematch in the playoffs isn’t out of the question.
