Los Angeles police officers reassigned from their duties to offer security for Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris has recently seen a shift in her security arrangements, now relying on officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after President Trump revoked her Secret Service protections.

According to a report, 14 officials from LAPD’s top metro division noted they had been “pulled from their working cases” to provide security for Harris, particularly to address “efforts to curb crime.” An unmarked LAPD SUV was spotted outside her home in the affluent Brentwood area of Los Angeles, where two officers were stationed.

Trump’s decision to strip Harris of her Secret Service details came through an order signed last week. Traditionally, former vice presidents retain six months of protection; however, Harris lost her details on July 21. Interestingly, before leaving office on January 20, former President Biden had quietly extended Harris’s Secret Service protection throughout the year.

It’s somewhat unclear why Biden chose to prolong Harris’s security. Local officials have criticized Trump for removing her Secret Service details, suggesting it was an act of political retaliation. They expressed concern for Harris’s safety, emphasizing their intention to collaborate with the governor to ensure her security in Los Angeles.

In response to the cancellation of her Secret Service details, Harris is also expected to receive protection from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). This arrangement would need authorization from Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, though his office has not confirmed specific security plans, stating that “authority should not be subject to unstable, rooted political impulses.”

Earlier this year, Trump had also halted taxpayer-funded security for various members of the Biden family and some former officials. By the time of publication, both the LAPD and Harris’s offices had not responded to requests for comments.
