Gazan Boy Found Alive After Reported Death

A young boy from Gaza, initially thought to be dead after a shooting incident involving the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in May, has been found alive. The boy, named Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hamden, or “Abboud,” was reunited with his mother after being safely extracted from the Gaza Strip, although the exact location remains undisclosed for their safety.

In a recent interview facilitated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) through a translator, both Abboud and his mother shared their experiences. Abboud expressed his amazement about being outside the Gaza Strip, indicating a sense of relief and wonder.

Abboud’s story garnered attention after Anthony Aguilar, a former contractor with GHF and a retired Green Beret, shared details of the incident. He recounted a moment captured on body camera where Abboud approached him, expressing gratitude after receiving food aid. Aguilar described the chaotic scene when they were forced to leave the aid site amidst the chaos of pepper spray, tear gas, and stun grenades. It was shortly after this that gunfire erupted, leading to the initial claims about Abboud’s fate.

Aguilar, who was contracted through GHF, reported hearing gunshots before discovering the aftermath. His accounts and footage circulated widely, raising concerns about the actions of both the GHF and IDF amidst the ongoing conflict.

GHF, which ceased its contract with Aguilar in June, initiated an investigation. It involved tracking down Abboud and his mother by verifying their identities through various means, including facial recognition software, which matched images collected during the aid distribution.

Expressing relief at Abboud’s safe return, GHF Executive Chair Johnny Moore highlighted the emotional toll such stories can take on families and the importance of truth in these incidents. However, he also noted the risks of premature reporting, stating that facts should take priority over headlines, especially when children’s lives are at stake.

Currently, Abboud and his mother are in a secure location, and it is hoped they will soon begin a new chapter away from the violence of the Gaza Strip. Abboud’s mother expressed her gratitude for the support they received, reiterating her desire for her son to have peace in their future.
