Concerns Over Anti-Semitism at Harvard
Scott Jennings, a Republican strategist, pointed out on Wednesday that there is a pervasive issue of anti-Semitism at Harvard University, despite a federal court ruling related to the Trump administration’s actions.
Judge Alison D. Burrows, appointed by Obama, asserted that the Trump administration’s choice to suspend $2 billion in funding for Ivy League schools was unconstitutional. Jennings remarked that even with Harvard’s legal victory, the situation remains “embarrassing” for the institution.
“I think it has appeal. Legal outcomes can be unpredictable. Honestly, this is quite embarrassing for Harvard,” Jennings told Abby Phillip on “CNN Newsnight.” He added, “There are federal judges acknowledging that anti-Semitism is unacceptable, clearly based on Harvard’s own assessments.”
“It’s well recognized that our top university has long struggled with anti-Semitism, and this administration was ready to confront that,” Jennings said. “It’s a fight worth having,” he emphasized.
On May 6, Harvard disclosed that Education Secretary Linda McMahon would not receive future grants, citing a “systematic pattern of violating federal law.”
In her ruling, Burrows stated, “The defendants and the president have the right to combat anti-Semitism through all legal avenues. Harvard was wrong to have tolerated any hateful behavior for so long.” She also noted that “Harvard is taking steps to address anti-Semitism, albeit belatedly, and is open to doing more if needed.” According to Burrows, the court now has a responsibility to safeguard academic freedom and free speech under the Constitution.
The Department of Homeland Security concluded its accreditation for Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP) on May 22.
Following attacks by Hamas, a radical Islamic group that led to over 1,200 deaths in Israel on October 7, 2023, protesters occupied a building, chanting slogans that have been prevalent since the attack. The atmosphere at several universities, including Harvard, has reportedly been tense for Jewish students.
