Protesters Facing Backlash Over Actions in Portland
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has expressed strong disapproval of the actions taken by protesters, including the use of guillotines outside their Portland office earlier this week. This criticism follows footage showing demonstrators burning flags and clashing with law enforcement during Labor Day events.
An ICE spokesperson described the protesters’ behavior as “hinge-free,” emphasizing that calling for violence against officers was reckless. They highlighted a troubling 1,000% increase in assaults against ICE personnel, noting that these officers risk their lives daily to apprehend violent individuals violating immigration laws.
Portland’s Mayor, Keith Wilson, has reaffirmed the city’s commitment to sanctuary policies. He indicated that local law enforcement would not assist ICE amidst the recent clashes at the South Macadam Avenue facility. “Our goal as a sanctuary city is to avoid any cooperation with ICE under any circumstances,” Wilson stated, underscoring the stance shared with the governor.
During the protests, tensions escalated as videos showed police attempting to disperse large crowds, while protesters hurled insults at them. Some demonstrators used riot shields for protection against projectiles reportedly fired by law enforcement.
ICE Deputy Director Madison Xiahan acknowledged the dangers faced by their officers but asserted that their mission will remain unchanged. “We will continue to pursue those who compromise the safety of American citizens,” she proclaimed, emphasizing support for ICE staff and their required resources.
