Jannik Sinner Faces Fan Incident at US Open

Jannik Sinner’s journey at the US Open took an unexpected turn, and not in a favorable way.

After his impressive win over Alexander Bublik in the fourth round, Sinner revealed that fans attempted to access his bag, which caught him off guard. “No, I’ve never experienced anything like that,” he commented Wednesday night following a solid match against Lorenzo Musetti.

“You know, it was. I don’t have my racket in there, so I quickly checked to see if anything was missing. Just a phone and a wallet, really, but I’d say security does great work. There’s plenty of it around, especially on the court,” he explained.

During a moment where Sinner approached the crowd to toss a towel to a cheering fan, another individual managed to reach around him in an attempt to get into his tennis bag.

A security guard quickly noticed the commotion and stepped in to handle the situation, raising his hands to signal for calm.

USTA officials informed the Daily Mail that they opted not to penalize the fans involved, despite some calls on social media for their expulsion from the venue.

This incident gained more traction than a recent video featuring Polish CEO Piotr Szczelek, who inadvertently became part of a scene when a young child flipped a hat during a match involving Kamil Magitirczak and Karen Khachanov.

Sinner remarked on the bag incident, stating, “I immediately checked if anything was taken. No racket there. Just my phone and wallet. But I think security is doing a great job.”

Thus far, Sinner’s two weeks at the US Open have been relatively smooth, with the only hiccup being this odd fan interaction. He had a close call in the third round against No. 27 seed Dennis Shapovalov, where he lost one set on his path to the semi-finals.

Having secured Grand Slam titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, Sinner faced a heartbreaking loss in the finals at the French Open to Carlos Alcaraz. The 24-year-old is set to challenge Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals on Friday, while Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will compete on the opposite side of the draw.
