Democratic Squad Members Condemn Israeli Politicians
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, part of the progressive Democratic squad, expressed her frustration towards Israeli politicians during a passionate address at the Palestinian People’s Assembly held in Detroit.
During the Pro-Palestinian Conference on Sunday, Tlaib criticized the U.S. as a nation rooted in racism, prompting some experts to point out that lax U.S. immigration policies may be fueling increasing anti-American sentiments and the rise of ethnic politics.
Simon Hankinson, a Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, called for American leaders to enforce stricter immigration standards to curb foreign loyalty. He stressed that anyone taking the oath of citizenship should renounce all allegiance to foreign powers.
“If you’re a politician or a judge, your loyalty should solely be with the United States,” he stated.
Tlaib faced backlash for remarks perceived as “celebrating terrorism,” made during her pro-Palestinian speech.
In her address, she directed her anger towards Israeli leaders and supporters, passionately saying, “To all the genocide enablers, we won’t go anywhere.” This fiery rhetoric highlighted her views on the oppression faced by Palestinians. She referred to the U.S. government as an “empire” built on a history of slavery and violence, claiming that the same oppression happening in Gaza was also present in American cities.
Commenting on Tlaib’s remarks, Hankinson articulated concern that criticizing the foundations of the United States poses a danger, especially when such views come from elected officials. He mentioned historical examples from countries like Lebanon and India, where ethnic conflicts obstruct social progress.
In a recent conference in Mexico City, Rep. Delia Ramirez expressed her pride in her Guatemalan roots, pointing out a contrast to the narratives from some politicians about U.S. identity. Meanwhile, another member of the squad, Rep. Ilhan Omar, reportedly suggested that the U.S. had become one of the worst nations under the Trump administration.
Hankinson observed that the concept of assimilation has become increasingly contentious. He believes that to assimilate successfully, individuals must embrace American identity fully—including understanding its history and language.
The ongoing debates about immigration and national loyalty pose critical questions for American society as it grapples with the balance between diversity and unity.
Despite requests for comment from the White House and other representatives, responses were not immediately available. It’s clear that the discussions triggered by Tlaib’s comments are far from resolved, as the conversation around immigration and national identity continues to evolve.
