Rep. John James Tops Michigan Governor's Republican Primary Race, According to Leaked Poll

John James Leads in Michigan’s 2026 Republican Primary Poll

Republican Representative John James from Michigan seems to be ahead of his competitors in the state’s upcoming 2026 Republican primary, according to a campaign memo leaked recently.

The former president of James Group International (JGI) declared his intention to run for governor in April.

A poll conducted between August 18th and 21st asked 400 Michiganders about their preferred candidates if the primary were held today.

The results showed that James topped the poll with 55% of the votes, while 33% of respondents remained undecided.

Other Republican candidates include former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Arik Nesbitt, and former chairman of the Michigan House of Representatives, Tom Leonard.

The same poll revealed that 62% of those surveyed held a “somewhat” or “very favorable” view of James, while a mere 6% had an unfavorable opinion.

This sentiment mirrors another poll where former President Donald Trump enjoyed a high favorability rating of 91%, with only 5% viewing him unfavorably.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t James’ first shot at campaigning; he has experienced mixed success in past elections.

In 2018, he ran for the US Senate but lost by 7%. He faced another defeat in 2020, losing by under 2%. However, he did win a seat in 2022, representing Michigan’s 10th District. The upcoming gubernatorial election is set for November 2026.

Current Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer will not be available indefinitely, leading to numerous candidates from both parties vying for her position.

Michigan has become a significant battleground state, with Trump securing a narrow victory there. Interestingly, many counties leaned more Republican in the recent 2024 elections.

In a recent interview, James suggested, “We need to start winning again in Michigan.” He emphasized that a strong Republican ticket is crucial for supporting Trump’s agenda.
