Garrett Wilson Named Jets Captain for the First Time
Garrett Wilson has been chosen as a captain by his teammates, marking an important milestone in his journey with the Jets.
This decision reflects the emergence of young leaders on the team, especially after Wilson signed a four-year contract extension during the offseason.
“I think I’ve gained some recognition since I came into the league, and honestly, this is probably something I’ll share with my kids one day,” Wilson expressed on Thursday. “Looking back at the last three years, I realize I’m not the loudest voice in the room. When it comes to leadership roles, I might not fit the conventional mold. But knowing that my teammates appreciate my approach and that they value what I say means a lot to me.”
Alongside Wilson, the Jets have other captains including quarterback Justin Fields, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, linebacker Jamien Sherwood, and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball.
“With this role comes extra responsibility,” Wilson acknowledged. “But it’s a responsibility I’m eager to embrace. I look forward to stepping up and taking charge, although I believe every person’s approach to leadership is unique.”
New addition, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, praised Quinnen Williams, highlighting him as a key figure in the defense. “He’s an all-pro,” Phillips said. “When I stepped onto the practice field, I asked, ‘Which player will surprise the fans this year?’ I know being an All-Pro is a big deal, but I believe he’ll even exceed those expectations.”
In injury news, cornerback Sauce Gardner (fibula) and quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee) have moved from limited practice to full participation. However, offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor (hands) was limited in practice and did not participate on Wednesday.
