Bill Ackman Shifts Support to Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
Billionaire investor Bill Ackman has declared his support for Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race, a notable change from his prior endorsement of Mayor Eric Adams.
Ackman shared his thoughts on social media, praising Adams as a “charismatic, high-energy leader” who demonstrated genuine empathy and provided critical support to the New York community during challenging times. However, he expressed concern about Adams’ declining poll numbers, stating, “Eric’s polls have deteriorated significantly since the primary, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that he has no chance to beat @Zohrankmamdani.”
Just a couple of months back, Ackman was backing Adams and urged Cuomo to drop out of the race, criticizing Cuomo for lacking the “restrained energy” necessary for the competition against Mamdani.
Ackman, who previously donated $500,000 to Cuomo’s unsuccessful Democratic primary campaign, seems to be re-evaluating the landscape of the race.
Current polling indicates that Adams is trailing significantly and has struggled to garner strong support amid ongoing corruption scandals. In contrast, Cuomo’s approval ratings have seen a rise, even if frontrunner Mamdani’s support has somewhat stagnated.
Ackman emphasized the need for improvement in New York City, saying, “@Andrewcuomo is an experienced leader who cares deeply about our city, possessing the necessary skills to lead and enhance NYC.” He acknowledged Cuomo’s successful tenure as governor, while also noting that he had made mistakes, expressing his belief in leaders who can learn and grow from their experiences.
