‘Boston Fails to Safeguard Its Residents’: Trump Administration Sues Another Sanctuary City

Trump Administration Sues Boston Over Sanctuary Law

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Boston on Thursday, targeting a sanctuary law that hampers federal immigration efforts to apprehend illegal immigrant criminals within the city.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has named Boston’s Democratic Mayor, Michelle Wu, Boston Police Chief Michael Cox, and the city’s sanctuary policies in its legal action. Federal prosecutors argue these laws threaten both law enforcement and community safety. This move follows a previous request from the DOJ for Boston officials to align with federal immigration protocols, warning that noncompliance might lead to funding cuts or civil lawsuits.

Attorney General Pam Bondy expressed strong disapproval, labeling Boston as one of the leading sanctuary cities that actively protects illegal immigrants from law enforcement. “They’re undermining the judicial system,” she asserted. “If Boston doesn’t safeguard its citizens from crimes committed by illegal aliens, then this Department of Justice will take action.”

The filing specifically references Boston’s Trust Act, which instructs police to refuse requests from immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) to detain individuals charged with serious crimes, including violent offenses. The litigation points out concerns raised by ICE regarding the release of dangerous individuals, as a lack of cooperation prevents local enforcement from addressing certain cases.

Bondy documented her concerns in a letter dated August 13, urging Wu to recognize Boston’s designation as a sanctuary city and comply with federal immigration regulations. She insisted that failing to do so would be unacceptable and demanded an acknowledgment of compliance within a week. Wu, however, publicly resisted Bondy’s directive, even incorporating a local artist’s performance into her initial speech on the matter.

Boston joins a list of sanctuary cities that have faced similar lawsuits from the Trump administration, including places like New York City and Los Angeles. While some cities have succumbed to federal pressure, Boston maintains its position. Wu declared the administration’s actions as an unwelcome attempt to undermine the city’s values, stating, “Boston is a thriving community and we refuse to relinquish our rights.”

She affirmed her commitment to upholding the laws that protect Boston’s residents, emphasizing the city’s legal backing in past court battles against such challenges.
