Andrew Cuomo meets with Al Sharpton to seek support in the NYC mayoral race

Cuomo Meets with Sharpton Amid Race Rumors

Speculation is growing after former Governor Andrew Cuomo met with Pastor Al Sharpton on Friday morning. The meeting raised eyebrows, particularly as rumors suggest that Mayor Eric Adams might withdraw from the race.

Cuomo invited Sharpton for breakfast at the Regency Hotel, urging him to “have an open mind” about a possible head-to-head matchup between Cuomo and Socialist Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani.

Sharpton expressed his respect for Mamdani, noting, “I’ve known Andrew for 40 years; we go way back to the ’80s with my father, Mario Cuomo.” It seems that even after so long, the dynamics of their relationships are still quite complex.

“That’s something to consider,” Sharpton added, indicating this could be a significant moment in the ongoing political landscape.

In past discussions, prominent civil rights activists and radio hosts have suggested Cuomo reconsider his campaign aspirations, especially as Mamdani has gained traction within the Democratic primary.

Sharpton criticized both Cuomo and Adams recently for missing the “Wall Street March,” a protest where Mamdani was present along with various independent candidates opposing Trump’s policies.

“I don’t endorse candidates, but I’ll make it a point to be there,” Sharpton remarked. He emphasized that the votes from the Black community could play a crucial role in upcoming elections, pointing out that Cuomo hadn’t actively sought support from this demographic.

Cuomo shared a moment from their breakfast on social media, captioning it, “A great breakfast to catch up with my old friend, @thereval.”

Rich Azzopaldi, Cuomo’s spokesperson, remarked, “They occasionally meet for breakfast to discuss issues that matter to cities, states, and nations. Today’s meeting was productive and positive.”

On another note, Democratic consultant Chris Sosa commented that the convention could reveal growing support for Mamdani, worried that Cuomo might be losing ground as Democratic leaders rally behind the newer candidate. “Cuomo obviously needs a miracle to succeed,” Sosa claimed. “Mathematics in elections is straightforward.”

Another operative put it bluntly: “Classic Cuomo, securing funding, voting blocs, surveillance, and union backing.” It seems the political chess game continues, with strategies evolving at every turn.
