DOJ Files Lawsuits Against Southern California Edison Over Wildfires

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched two lawsuits against Southern California Edison (SCE), accusing the utility of negligence linked to two major wildfires: the Eaton Fire in January 2025 and the Fairview Fire in September 2022. These fires have collectively resulted in at least 21 fatalities, widespread destruction of structures, and burned over 42,000 acres within the National Forest System.

The January Eaton Fire, in particular, was one of the most catastrophic fires in California’s history, claiming 19 lives and engulfing more than 14,000 acres in the Los Angeles area. The impact was severe, with over 16,000 buildings damaged or destroyed.

Pedro Pizarro, the CEO of Edison International, acknowledged the ongoing investigation into the cause of the Eaton Fire. He mentioned that SCE is looking into whether its equipment played a role in the outbreak of the fire.

In July, Edison announced plans to implement a compensation program aimed at quickly assisting those affected by the fires.

Pizarro stated that residents should not have to wait for the completion of the investigation to receive necessary financial support. “SCE aims to create a swift process to handle claims effectively,” he noted.

However, according to the DOJ’s latest lawsuit, the Eaton Fire was reportedly ignited by SCE’s inadequate power infrastructure, which the company owns and maintains. Additionally, the DOJ is pursuing damages for the Fairview Fire, which resulted in two deaths and scorched more than 28,000 acres of land, including a significant portion of the San Bernardino National Forest. Firefighters attribute the spark that ignited the Fairview Fire to a contact between a power line and a communications cable.

Los Angeles City Attorney Bill Essay remarked on the lawsuit, highlighting a troubling pattern of negligence by SCE that has led to significant destruction and financial costs incurred by taxpayers. “We’re hoping this filing spurs a cultural change within Edison, making them more responsible and accountable,” he stated.

The DOJ is pursuing over $40 million in damages for costs incurred by the U.S. Forest Service to manage and rehabilitate areas affected by the Eaton Fire, along with approximately $37 million for the Fairview Fire, totaling around $77 million.

SCE’s spokesperson, Jeff Monford, expressed condolences for the losses sustained due to the Eaton Fire, emphasizing the company’s commitment to minimizing wildfire risks through improved practices and infrastructure.
