Calls for Financial Disclosure from Lewandowski
Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California and a prominent member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, is pressing for the release of a personal financial disclosure form from Corey Lewandowski. Lewandowski, once a campaign advisor to former President Trump, is currently serving as a senior advisor at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Garcia expressed concern about the lack of transparency regarding Lewandowski’s financial status. He noted this issue undermines public trust in government operations in a letter to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Garcia emphasized the need for Lewandowski’s financial disclosure report to be made public as mandated by law.
On a related note, DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin stated that Lewandowski’s role at the department required “career DHS employees to submit paperwork regularly.” She also mentioned that he has not received any salary or federal benefits since joining the department.
Yet, his financial disclosures remain undisclosed. There are regulations that necessitate these disclosures to be submitted within 60 days unless exceptions apply. Garcia also reached out to the government’s Ethics Bureau, urging them to release Lewandowski’s report to the oversight committee and the public, as legally required.
Garcia pointed out that Lewandowski should qualify as a public filer because he has served in his role for over 60 days. According to DHS, he worked for at least 69 days, starting from late January 2025.
Initially, Lewandowski was classified as a special government employee (SGE), a temporary position usually limited to 130 days per year. During his time with the DHS, he often traveled with the DHS Chief and has been lauded for his effectiveness, reportedly serving as Noem’s Chief of Staff.
McLaughlin affirmed in a statement that Lewandowski is an advisor to Secretary Noem, highlighting that decision-making involves multiple senior advisors, with the final call resting with the Secretary. She emphasized that various staff members contribute recommendations for her consideration.
Garcia is still urging DHS to disclose Lewandowski’s financial information to the House panel. Earlier in August, he raised questions regarding whether Lewandowski might have exceeded his SGE limit without accurately recording all his work days.
