Trump’s Vision for a New Air Force One
Former President Donald Trump is pushing for a fresh iteration of Air Force One, which seems to complicate matters for Boeing’s anticipated alternative to the presidential aircraft.
As of 2020, there are at least 20 planes in the executive fleet, with no new additions in nearly 27 years. Some of these aircraft are expected to remain operational for another 13 years.
“They don’t build planes quickly enough, meaning they’re actually defaulting,” Trump remarked in a February interview with Sean Hannity, referencing Boeing.
Air Force One designates aircraft carrying commanders and currently includes two highly customized planes that were deployed in 1990 during George H.W. Bush’s presidency. Since then, these planes have also transported Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Trump, and now Joe Biden again.
Qatari Air Force 1 Jet Situation
Trump expressed nostalgia about Air Force One during a veterans’ event, remarking, “I miss Air Force 1,” which highlights the emotional connection many have to the aircraft.
However, the two new Boeing models face delays due to the intricate technology needed for an Air Force craft. “They have to debug it. Make sure there’s no risk of signal intelligence. And they’re only focused on ensuring it’s safe against potential military threats,” he noted, implying the ironic situation of relying on foreign aircraft technology.
The CatariJet might have a quicker timeline, though it would still require some technology upgrades to meet Air Force standards. “From an economic standpoint, that could make sense, but I worry about allowing foreign nations to supply such significant aircraft for the president,” someone like Solomon stated, reflecting concerns about security.
Air Force One differs from typical passenger planes, requiring four engines and high-level communications security to defend against foreign surveillance. Additionally, the aircraft has air-to-air refueling capabilities, ensuring it can operate as needed, especially in worst-case scenarios. “They’re very complicated, and I won’t get into the details, but it’s not just like making a regular 747,” Trump mentioned during a Middle Eastern trip in May.
Plans for Qatar Jets as Air Force One
Air Force officials believe it’s possible to incorporate some security features into the CatariJet, but they express doubt about achieving a full suite of technology in time for Trump’s envisioned timeline.
“It could potentially be ready by the end of his presidency,” Solomon suggested.
The latest in the executive fleet includes four modified Boeing 757 or C-32A models added in 1998 and 1999. The Air Force is evaluating exchange options, yet the current aircraft will continue service until 2038, primarily for vice presidents, cabinet members, and other officials.
Even with the planes we have now, the environment we’re operating in means we need to adjust our behaviors based on the potential threats, which is always a consideration, though I can’t delve too deeply into that.
It’s not just Air Force One that’s aging; many executive aircraft are over two decades old. While some modernization efforts might have occurred, concerns linger about the timelines for major updates given various incidents over the years.
In the U.S. 6th Generation Arsenal
In 2014, Obama had to switch planes unexpectedly during a campaign event, and in 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris’ plane was forced to return to Andrews Joint Base while on a trip to Guatemala and Mexico due to an emergency. More recently, Secretary Marco Rubio’s flight had to turn back due to mechanical issues on his way to Munich.
Once again, the newest aircraft in the executive fleet is the Marine Corps helicopter, which Biden rode for the first time during the 2024 Democratic National Convention. These updates took nearly 20 years and replaced some helicopters dating back to the 1970s.
The Boeing 777X is set to become the next significant commercial aircraft, with service expected to begin in 2026 after several delays. This plane boasts features like folding wingtips, touchscreen flight decks, and increased cabin space.
