Republican Legislators Criticize Sen. Jon Ossoff for Taking Credit on Veterans Legislation

Ossoff Faces Backlash Over VA Home Loan Reform Claims

Senator John Ossoff (D-GA) is under fire from Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI), various Georgia Republicans, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) following comments he made about a veterans’ bill. On Wednesday, Ossoff shared a video applauding the bipartisan VA Home Loan Reform Act, which was signed into law by President Trump. He emphasized its importance for protecting veterans from foreclosure, framing it as beneficial legislation aimed at preventing homelessness among veterans.

The law is designed to allow veterans who have fallen behind on mortgage payments to add those missed payments to the end of their loan terms. However, many are contesting Ossoff’s portrayal of the legislation.

Van Orden, who introduced the bill in the House, quickly responded, labeling Ossoff’s statements as “a flat-out lie” and pointing out that he had no involvement in the bill’s passage, nor did he vote for it. In a follow-up post, Van Orden suggested that veterans and supporters should contact Ossoff’s office to express their dissatisfaction.

Additionally, Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), who is campaigning against Ossoff in the 2026 Senate race, chimed in, stating, “Amen Brother! Being from Georgia should mean something in DC.” Republican Buddy Carter also criticized Ossoff, calling his claims a “pathetic, nasty lie” and accusing him of using veterans as a political tool.

In a related comment, another Republican contender, Derek Dooley, expressed frustration with Ossoff’s actions, arguing that he was misrepresenting a bill in which he played no part, simply for media attention.

Various news outlets in Georgia, including WSB Radio, WSB-TV, FOX5, and WRBL, have noted that while Van Orden brought forth the bill without Ossoff’s support, Ossoff’s office has joyfully acknowledged the bill since its enactment. Moreover, reports clarify that Ossoff did not co-sponsor the legislation and did not work directly with the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee concerning this bill.

Meanwhile, NRSC Chairman Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) criticized Ossoff’s remarks as “hogwash,” asserting that Georgia deserves better representation. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) echoed this sentiment by stating that many people are frustrated with politicians making veterans the center of political plays, underscoring that Ossoff had no actual involvement in the bill. Georgia Insurance Secretary John King added to the backlash, emphasizing that Ossoff’s praise for the bill is unfounded due to his lack of connection to its creation.
