Person Arrested and Charged with Murder in NC Train Stabbing

Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the stabbing death of a Ukrainian woman on a North Carolina train. He faces first-degree murder charges.

DeCarlos Brown Jr., 34, was reportedly taken into custody after a 23-year-old named Iryna Zarutska was fatally injured on August 22 while riding a Charlotte Light Rail vehicle. The report suggests that he was charged with first-degree murder following the incident.

Details from a released video show the moments before and after the attack. In one part of the footage, Brown can be seen seated in the train when Zarutska boards. The video later captures him unfolding a pocket knife before confronting her.

One clip reportedly shows him extracting the knife, standing, and getting ready to strike Zarutska, after which he stabbed her three times in the throat before leaving the scene.

In the initial video frame, a man identified as Brown is seated on the train, appearing troubled. As Zarutska enters and takes her seat, another angle captures her moments before the assault.

Approximately a minute and a half into the footage, Brown is seen preparing his knife and then, startlingly, he attacks Zarutska. The video freezes at critical moments to emphasize the severity of the situation.

According to WBTV, the footage shows Brown shaking his arm after the attack, while Zarutska visibly struggles and falls to the floor in shock.

Further clips seem to depict Brown moving through the rail cars with blood visible on him.

Officials have said that Brown will remain in custody while undergoing a competency evaluation.

In light of the video’s release by the Charlotte Area Transit System, Mayor VI Lyles expressed gratitude to the media and community members for refraining from sharing the footage, as a sign of respect for Zarutska’s family. Lyles remarked that it was a heartbreaking event and extended prayers to her loved ones, addressing the profound nature of this tragic loss.

M. Quentin Williams, a former FBI agent, pointed out that the incident underscores broader issues relating to mental health and safety in public spaces. He noted that Zarutska was caught off guard, emphasizing how quickly the attack unfolded—a situation that left her unable to defend herself.

“It happened so fast,” he stated. “He targeted the most vulnerable person on that train. She was right there, close to him.”
